Consumer Alert - Trojan Fire & Ice Condoms

Consumer Alert - Trojan Fire & Ice Condoms

2 minute read

Upon examining a Trojan Fire & Ice condom, I immediately noticed something was very wrong.

Shockingly, after taking a Trojan Fire & Ice condom out of its wrapper and handling it, the lubricant on the condom disintegrated and stripped off all of my red enamel nail polish (after completely eating through the clear top coat of polish).

Just to be sure, I tested a second Fire & Ice condom. The same thing occurred and more enamel was stripped off my nails. Then, my hands began to burn and I got a painful scorching sensation on the skin that came into contact with these condoms. This has never happened to me before with any other condom and I’m not allergic to latex.

This prompted me to research the ingredients in this lube, as I felt it was potentially unsafe. I discovered a multitude of customer based sites claiming that the Fire & Ice condoms were extremely painful and unfit for use. I couldn't find one positive review. In some cases, men and women alike were completely incapacitated for hours by the burning sensations, even after using soap and water.

I uncovered a FDA report from 2012, in which the FDA was chastising Trojan for misinforming and misleading customers regarding the ingredients in this lube. Despite this stern warning from the government, Trojan brand doesn’t list ingredients on their Fire & Ice box to this day, citing other condom companies, like Billy Boy condoms, aren’t required to do so.

Although Trojan won’t state their lube ingredients, consumers have speculated: benzocaine, menthol, capsaicin, glycerol and nonoxynol-9 spermicide to be present in the lubricant of the Fire & Ice condoms. Benzocaine is a numbing agent found in many climax control lubricants, menthol is responsible for the “icey” feeling, capsaicin is a derivative of chili peppers which causes a “firey” feeling, glycerol is a sugar based substance known to cause yeast infections and nonoxynol-9 is a harmful spermicide which can cause vaginal lesions.

Despite washing with soap three times since very briefly handling the 2 Fire & Ice condoms over 1.5 hours ago, my hands still haven’t recovered from this intense burning sensation. Personally, after my own experience and after gathering information from the FDA and fellow consumers, I feel these condoms are unfit for use and could potentially cause short and/or long term damage to the genital region and/or mouth.
